What Is a Goodyear Welt

Invented in 1869 by Charles Goodyear Jr., the Goodyear Welt technique joins the upper, insole and outsole using a thin leather strip called the welt.

How We Make Them

Every Goodyear Welt shoe begins with precision and patience. A single pair takes several days to complete and involves more than two hundred individual steps, most performed by hand.

1. Lasting

The leather upper is stretched and shaped around a wooden last to define the silhouette and ensure a flawless fit.

2. Preparing the Insole

We use thick, vegetable-tanned leather to create the insole. A small ridge, or rib, is added to anchor the Goodyear stitching that joins the upper and welt.

3. The Cork Filling

A layer of natural cork is placed between the insole and outsole. It softens the step, molds to the foot, absorbs moisture and adds light insulation. Many of the best Italian shoemakers source their cork from Portugal and Sardinia for its superior structure.

4. Goodyear Stitching
